"In 2018, we began works on the first of a several phased renovation for our Cornish cottage and grounds. Recommended highly by a friend, we consulted with Nigel on our overview and he provided experienced knowledge and suggestions. It was invaluable having Nigel to help during our project as the scope of works required experience and knowledge of an in-depth renovation which began with conversion of a dilapidated garage into a cosy work from home office and studio. Nigel supported us with sourcing excellent contractors and trades to complete this, and the transformative groundworks outside our house. Always coming up with great solutions to challenging problems.

In the third phase of renovating our 3 bed cottage, we had a vision and Nigel was able to work with us using sustainable building methods, to create a gorgeous new family home in the sound walls of a 200 year old cottage. We got initial plans passed with an architect, but it was working with Nigel that we got all the in-depth details finalised. He helped us appoint an excellent main contractor and electrician and this helped the project stay on time and within our budget, during the aftermath of covid.

A project of this scale is not without its complexities and stressful elements, but with Nigel beside us we had peace of mind throughout. The scope of works included a complete re-roof and gutting of everything except the flooring joists, a rebuild with internal Natural Wood Fibre (NWF) insulation on all external walls and roof, with vaulted ceilings and velux. Earth floors were replaced with insulation and a concrete slab with underfloor heating from our ASHP and unpainted lime was used to create beautiful aesthetic internal spaces. We did a bit of the work ourselves, and Nigel embraced this as part of the project, and was patient with us when it took slightly longer than we estimated!

"Nigel Stannard of SBM projects has just completed a renovation on a challenging site in Cornwall. Nigel joined us once we had just obtained planning permission and ran a tender on our behalf. The costs for the development came back higher than predicted by the Architect, so Nigel helped re-design the property to within budget. Once agreed, Nigel found an excellent contractor who took on the build and completed the property to a very high standard. We separated some large items (kitchen purchase for example) away from the main contractor’s specification, to give us flexibility of design and cost. Given we live over 4 hours away from the house, one of the main benefits of working with Nigel is his flexibility. With regards to the budget and timeline, this was documented at the start of the project and regularly updated throughout the build, so it was easy to see what stage we were at, when the next payment was due and any variance agreed during the project.

"We were already aware of Nigel’s reputation for design, build and project manage. The works were to remove a structural support wall between kitchen and dining room, install new kitchen with island and to level floors; remove door from hallway and close. In addition, widen the back door to replace with a stable door. Completely redesign annex which served as utility/shower room and toilet transforming the area into one good sized utility with ample cupboards above washer and drying machines, larger shower and relocating fridge / freezer to the kitchen.

What was not expected were the number of problems removing flooring in the kitchen and water piping laid found to be laid in concrete in the annex. Those two matters added to time. The coving to the dining room was original plaster, the damaged plaster from the wall removal was replaced with newly moulded plaster.

Nigel ensured we had in place all items to be fitted and all build material delivered prior to start of work. His management of people needed to complete this enterprise was more then just a great weight lifted from us. We are really pleased with the end result. Lastly, the team of people he employed could not have been more pleasant and certainly proficient. ”

"When the time came to upgrade our kitchen diner and utility area we consulted with Nigel from SBM Projects to look at options and the best way to approach the project. Nigel was able to quickly assess the area, provide advice and guidance on what was and wasn’t possible and provided a full kitchen design service that addressed all the needs of our family. He also made us aware of some of the potential surprises that we may find during our the renovation, as our house is an old Victorian house. Nigel advised us on suppliers, meaning we didn’t have to use well-known but potentially overpriced vendors.

When the inevitable happened and we found that underneath our kitchen floor tiles was just bare earth Nigel was able to quickly organise digging out, damp-proofing and relaying the floor all whilst we were on holiday. "We employed SBM Projects to lead on our house rebuild project in St Germans. This was no easy task as it was a full house knock-down and rebuild in a conservation area. "We Hired SBM Projects to oversee the rebuild of our studio, formerly a large dilapidated old structure converted into a brilliant studio perfect work from home space. The rebuild was in-depth, requiring electricity, data, sewage & water infrastructure. the structure needed pulling down leaving the existing stone walls in place, a complete rebuild of the foundations, walls, and roof took place. Under SBM's recommendations the structure and retaining walls were tanked water sealed and heavily insulated, the studio is so well insulated that the heating (infrared) barely needs to turn on. It was SBM's influence that encouraged us to add sewage, in effect from this decision the studio is large and insulated enough to be converted into a dwelling, potentially future proofing the build.

SBM’s involvement was essential for keeping all the contractors working together positively, under our deadlines, he made sure all queries and issues were resolved with little impact on us.

Furthermore SBM also oversaw the landscaping of our back and front patio/garden areas, both areas needed a large amount of soil to be removed and extensive landscaping, something our architects suggested would cost too much to do, SBM found solutions to keep this all within our budget, creating wonderful outdoor areas for the family. "Nigel Stannard did an exceptional job of project managing the complete renovation of what is now called the South Bookham SPACE and Outer SPACE on behalf of the South Bookham Youth and Community Association (SBY&CA) Ltd charity.

The refurbishment of the dilapidated Boys Club on Dorking Road, Bookham, was a substantial undertaking costing almost £250,000 including VAT and involved co-ordinating fifteen separate contractors in two phases.

Phase 1, commenced in September 2011, comprised the total renovation and conversion of the main building into a sports hall with changing rooms, children and disabled WCs, plus fully furnished kitchen and meeting storage rooms. The works were completed within budget and on schedule and the South Bookham SPACE was opened in January 2012.

Phase 2, commenced in June 2012, involved re-levelling the grounds behind SPACE and the construction of a multi-use games area with all-weather surface, floodlights and re-bound fencing for 5-aside football, netball, basket-ball and tennis. The facilities were opened as the Outer SPACE in September 2012.

Nigel Stannard liaised fully with the SBY&CA management throughout, providing the professional project control and the detailed management information required by Mole Valley District Council and numerous funding providers. The final result has been held up as an outstanding example of a community regeneration project by the council, funders and most importantly the users."

“Nigel was the project manager for a significant extension and renovation that we completed last year. The build lasted about six months and included a two storey side extension, a single storey rear extension, new kitchen, new bathroom, new shower room, replacement of the central heating system, partial re-wiring of the house, new flooring throughout the downstairs, new drive/front wall and hard landscaping in the back garden.
